Solar Home Use

The DOE's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy newletter recently reported that solar energy implementation in the United States increased at a record pace in 2008. These reports are based on combined commercial and solar home use. However, you need only look around your neighborhood to see that more and more solar panels are being installed on rooftops and in yards to power at least some portion of our homes.

As global warming, air quality, and utility costs  continue to rise, people are starting to look at clean renewable energy as a viable  choice for residential electricity. Solar home use is becoming popular, but the initial cost can be a major obstacle for many homeowners. If you are fortunate enough to live in a state that is supporting individual micro-grids, then you can get some assistance
with grants and tax credits.

If not, you can still switch to solar home use at a reduced cost by making your home more efficient. If you decrease your energy consumption, you will decrease the size of the residential solar system you need. Here are a few ideas for reducing  your home power demands.

What kind of light bulbs are you using? The standard bulbs we use only contribute to higher electricity bills and more carbon dioxide. If you switch at least some of your standard bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, you can save the environment while decreasing the amount of electricity you need for solar

.

Make sure to seal any gaps around windows and doors to keep any drafts from blowing into the house, which can cost you more money. Make sure the house is well insulated to help cut down on those costs in the wintertime. The less the furnace or heater has to run, the better off everyone will be.

Take a look at your appliances. Are they devouring too much energy? If they’re older models, the answer is probably yes.  You can also save energy by changing some of the actions of you and your family.

Do you open the oven door several times to check and see if something is done? The harder an appliance has to work, the harder it is on the environment. Each time you open the door the temperature in the oven will drop.  The oven consumes additional electricity to get back to the original temperature. The same thing happens with the
refrigerator and freezer. The sooner you begin to decrease your electricity use, the sooner you can afford the switch to solar home use.
